Sea Soma

A fictional ecosystem exploring embodied cognition, screen based life and digital objects as somatic extensions.

Sea squirt swims freely in the sea until it finds a permanent place on the rock and swallows the nervous system. This creature provoked a theory that the brain evolved in parallel to the complexity of bodily movement.

"This is a set of experiments to find out how intelligence works through movement and embodied cognition. If we want humans and AI to thrive, we have to open up new spaces for creators who have a strong sens of embodiment. Soma is what helps us understand the world. In this instance, a dancer researcher is conducting experiments...”

"Touch is learned before perception. It is the first sense to explore the world. It is embedded in vision. To understand vision, dancer researcher explores the haptic qualities of the image as well as various material properties. She does not know what a hand is or what skin is for. All she knows about is sight and sound, synthetic beings and noises. She explores materials to see the world through the sensations of touch - by feeling textures and heat coming from objects.”
